ISO 14001:2026 transition guide

Moving from ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. Certificates to ISO 14001:2015 remain valid during a 36-month transition period ending in 2029, so certified organisations need to plan their update and transition audit.

This guide summarises what changes, the key dates and the steps QMS International uses to move environmental management systems to the new edition.

What changes in ISO 14001:2026

ISO 14001:2026 keeps the 2015 structure and sharpens several requirements. Most organisations need targeted updates rather than a new system.

Wider context

Context analysis covers climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem health, pollution and natural resource availability.

Risks and opportunities

Environmental aspects, compliance obligations and business risks and opportunities are treated more clearly and separately.

Change management

A structured process is required to identify, assess and control changes that could affect the system.

Life cycle perspective

Environmental aspects are considered across the life cycle, from sourcing and design to end-of-life.

Externally provided processes

Operational control extends to externally provided processes, products and services.

Internal audit objectives

Each internal audit must define its objectives as well as its scope and criteria.

A practical transition plan

The steps we follow with certified organisations, sized to your system and sites.

01. Gap analysis

We compare your ISO 14001:2015 system with ISO 14001:2026 and list the exact updates needed.

02. Targeted updates

Context, aspects, risks and opportunities, change process and life cycle records are updated.

03. Training

Managers, EHS staff and internal auditors are briefed on the 2026 requirements.

04. Internal audit

We audit the system against ISO 14001:2026, with defined audit objectives, before the transition audit.

ISO 14001:2026 and EU environmental rules

The transition is a good moment to align your system with EU requirements. IED 2.0 requires permitted installations to implement an environmental management system by 1 July 2027, and the Energy Efficiency Directive accepts a certified environmental management system with an energy audit in some cases.

A well-designed ISO 14001:2026 system also produces the environmental data needed for EU sustainability reporting and customer questionnaires.

  • IED 2.0 (Directive (EU) 2024/1785) environmental management system
  • Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791, Article 11
  • Environmental data for CSRD / ESRS reporting
  • Supplier and tender requirements across Europe

ISO 14001:2026 transition FAQs

Short answers to the questions certified organisations ask most often.

When was ISO 14001:2026 published?

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. It replaces ISO 14001:2015, including the 2024 climate change amendment.

Is my ISO 14001:2015 certificate still valid?

Yes. ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid during the 36-month transition period that ends in 2029. Your certification body confirms the exact deadline and when the transition audit can take place.

Do we need a full re-certification?

No. The transition is usually assessed during a surveillance or recertification audit, sometimes with extra audit time. Check the arrangements with your certification body early, as auditor availability tightens near the deadline.

What are the biggest changes in ISO 14001:2026?

A wider context analysis (climate change, biodiversity, pollution and resource availability), separate treatment of risks and opportunities, a new change management requirement, a stronger life cycle perspective, wider control of externally provided processes and defined objectives for each internal audit.

How does ISO 14001:2026 relate to IED 2.0?

The revised Industrial Emissions Directive requires operators of permitted installations to implement an environmental management system by 1 July 2027. An ISO 14001:2026 system gives a recognised structure for that, with some additional IED elements such as a chemicals inventory.

Can QMS International support our transition remotely?

Yes. Gap analyses, document reviews, training and internal audits can be delivered remotely, on-site or in a combination, for organisations anywhere in Europe.
