ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026 transition support

ISO 9001:2026 transition guide

Moving from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026

ISO 9001:2026 was published in September 2026. If your organisation is certified to ISO 9001:2015, your certificate stays valid until September 2029, but the transition needs planning: a gap analysis, a few targeted updates and a transition audit by your certification body.

This guide explains what changes, the key dates and the steps QMS International uses to move quality management systems to the new edition without unnecessary paperwork.

What changes in ISO 9001:2026

ISO 9001:2026 keeps the harmonised structure of the 2015 edition and adds limited new requirements. Most changes clarify expectations rather than add new documents.

Quality culture and ethics

Top management must promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour, and staff awareness now covers both.

Risks and opportunities

Risks and opportunities are addressed in separate subclauses, making it clearer how each is identified and acted on.

Planning of changes

Changes to the quality management system need clearer planning, communication, monitoring and review.

Quality policy and context

The quality policy should reflect strategy and external context more explicitly, including climate change where relevant.

Terms and definitions

Clause 3 now includes key quality management terms, so the standard relies less on ISO 9000.

Annex A guidance

Expanded clause-by-clause guidance helps organisations and auditors interpret the requirements consistently.

A practical transition plan

The steps we follow with certified organisations, sized to your system and number of sites.

01. Gap analysis

We compare your ISO 9001:2015 system with ISO 9001:2026 and list the exact updates needed.

02. Targeted updates

Quality policy, context, risks and opportunities, change planning and awareness records are updated.

03. Training

Managers, process owners and internal auditors are briefed on the 2026 requirements.

04. Internal audit

We audit the system against ISO 9001:2026 and support management review before the transition audit.

Why start the transition early

Certification bodies plan transition audits around your normal audit cycle. Starting early lets you combine the transition with a surveillance or recertification audit instead of paying for an extra visit.

It also avoids the rush near the deadline, when auditor availability is lower and any delay can put your certificate at risk.

  • Combine the transition with a planned surveillance audit
  • Spread the work across normal operations
  • Use the update to remove documents that add no value
  • Keep customers and tenders covered without interruption

ISO 9001:2026 transition FAQs

Short answers to the questions certified organisations ask most often.

When was ISO 9001:2026 published?

ISO 9001:2026 was published in September 2026. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 as the current edition of the quality management system standard.

Is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?

Yes. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid during the three-year transition period, which ends in September 2029. After that date, only ISO 9001:2026 certificates will be valid.

Do we need a full re-certification?

No. The transition is usually assessed during a surveillance or recertification audit, often with some extra audit time. Your certification body confirms how and when it will run the transition audit.

How long does the transition take?

For a well-maintained ISO 9001:2015 system, the gap analysis, updates, training and internal audit usually take a few weeks to a few months, depending on the size of the organisation and the number of sites.

What are the biggest changes in ISO 9001:2026?

The structure stays the same. The main changes are more emphasis on quality culture and ethical behaviour, separate treatment of risks and opportunities, clearer planning of changes, new terms in clause 3 and expanded guidance in Annex A.

Can QMS International support our transition remotely?

Yes. Gap analyses, document reviews, training and internal audits can be delivered remotely, on-site or in a combination, for organisations anywhere in Europe.
